About Us

We are the Doshers! Welcome to our corner of the world. We own a farm in south central Virginia that is not currently operating fully as a farm and while it is our home, we are not fully homesteading yet either. So, we’ve called ourselves a “farmstead”. During the height of the pandemic in 2020, we sold our very nice and much larger house in the suburbs and bought a very old and much neglected farm. That should tell you something about our sense of adventure!

From the beginning, our goal has been to bring our farm back to life while creating a self-sufficient home-steading lifestyle for our family. It has been a much slower process than we ever anticipated. Along the way, we’ve shared bits and pieces about our experiences with family and friends who are always eager to hear more. So, after much thought and prayer, we’ve decided to document our journey on this blog. By sharing our successes and lessons learned we hope to inspire others who share our interest in a self-sufficient lifestyle or are just curious about this way of living.

A self-sustaining lifestyle utilizes what you already have or what you can build, grow, design, create, etc. for yourself. So, most of what we share here originates from our farmstead or from our family. Our kids have an interest in the idea of “making your own” as well, so they share their projects here too. You will see posts on what we are renovating, growing, cooking, crafting, 3-D printing and a whole lot more. We are not experts either! We’re learning as we go and hope our space here can serve as a community for us to learn from too.

Much of what we are doing or get asked about, can also be done regardless of what environment you call home. So, whether you are out in the country as we are or you are in the suburbs with a backyard garden or in the city with a window box of herbs, we’re glad you’re here and we hope you find some tidbit that will inspire you in your own self-sustaining life journey. We hope you come back often and tell you friends and family to stop by and visit with us too!
